Haaaave you met Jill? An introduction

Hello everyone! My name is Jillian and I am almost out of here! That's right. In May of 2018 I am blowing this popsicle stand with degree in hand (rhyming).
Not to say the last three and a half years haven't been great. I'm double majoring in Letters and French and I've had wonderful classes with fabulous professors (including Mythology and Folklore!). I've made friends, joined organizations, and watched a lot of Netflix. But now I am going to be a real grown up and I'm going to get to pursue exactly what I am interested in.
I have always loved travel, and if you can't tell from the major in French, I love France. I studied abroad there during my sophomore year and it was the best experience of my life. I have applied to multiple programs that would allow me to live in France for  a year after graduation. But I have decided that even if I don't get accepted into any of these programs, I'm running away and I'll stay on some friends' couches.

I am not sure exactly what I want my future career to be, but I know it will include writing. Now, I don't care if I ever publish a book or have my name be well-known. I just love writing and that is what I want to do in any capacity. Even if it must be a hobby, writing is what I want to do in the future.
I have loved writing since before I knew how to write (seriously, I filled journal with scribbles while "writing" about far away lands). I had a knack for it through high school and I have never had to worry too much about papers for college. However, writing for the Mythology and Folklore class last semester reminded me of where my passion lies. When I was a kid I dreamed of being a writer like Gail Carson Levine (she has a great blog with writing tips if anyone is interested: Link).
I hope that this semester I can spend my time enjoying my last bit of time in college while also looking to the future and figuring out what exactly it is I want!

  1. Hi Jill! Congratulations on graduating soon! That is so cool that you got to travel abroad during your sophomore year, I have always wanted to travel abroad but I can’t seem to fit it in my schedule. I wish you lots of luck on getting into those programs in France! I love your passion for writing and you know that your future will involve writing no matter what.

  2. I am so excited about re-connecting again this semester and reading some more of your stories, Jillian! Somebody in Myth-Folklore is thinking about doing a project set at Windsor Castle with queens and princesses, and so of course I shared your Storybook with her as an example of a how a person and a place and stories can all come together in a project. And thank you so much for the tip about Gail Carson Levine's blog: super! Did I ever share Amanda Patterson's blog with you? She's a writer (in South Africa!) who shares great stuff online: Writers Write ... I hope this will be a wonderful semester of reading and writing for you! The Indian epics are inspiring so many contemporary Indian writers right now, who are retelling the stories in marvelous new ways (especially women who are reclaiming the traditions for themselves), and you all get to do the same in this class! :-)

  3. Hi Jillian! I am a senior this semester too and can't wait to get that piece of paper! But I have to admit, it will be surreal when the time rolls around. That is so neat that you studied abroad in France. One of my dreams in life is to live abroad for a while. I hope you find the perfect program for you in France this next year!

  4. Hey Jillian!
Wow I am super excited to read your stories. I feel like this class will be perfect for someone with such a passion for writing.
I also graduate in May (yikes, scary), but I'm planning on staying a little closer to home. I think it's so exciting that you want to go live abroad! Have you considered doing TeachAbroad? I know a few people who have loved it! You are going to have such wonderful adventures, no matter what you do! Can't wait to see what stories you write up.

  5. Hey Jillian,

As a Junior currently I am jealous of the fact that you are on your way out! I think it is really cool that you majored in French and Letters. I have always want to visit France, but I have never had the chance to. I would love to see more stories about your trip. I hope that you end up getting to write as much as you want after this semester is done and done!

  6. Hello Jillian,

I am also Senior and will graduate next semester so just one more semester after this one. Like you I also like to travel a lot to but during college time we are busy, and in summer I am busy with jobs so it kind of hard to make a schedule to travel outside the country. How long have you studied French language because from the Introduction you like France a lot and hope you get accept into the program that you want to get accept Good Luck.

  7. Hi Jillian,

As you mention I also love traveling but the only time I get to travel is when I am not in school or doing job. I like France and I would like to travel there. My uncle who is in France has been telling to come but all this school work, job, and paying for college is hard enough not to go to France. I can't even go to my home country which is India and it was after 7 seven years I have went there this Christmas.

  8. Hello Jillian!
I love travelling as well! I have also been to France but that was when I was younger. I would love to visit again, especially because I am a lot older so there will be a lot more for me to do there. More importantly, I will actually remember my travels!

I am also a senior and I am so ready to graduate and move on. I'm ready to start "adulting"!

  9. Hi Jill!
One of my biggest dreams is to go to France, I hope to get there one day soon! Your passion about writing really shines through, and I'm excited to see what kind of stories you come up with this semester as you delve into the Indian Epics and get your creativity flowing! When I was reading your story about the fairy sisters, I was inspired by your creativity in telling a brand new tale, and this Introduction shows that you're going to come up with many new and exciting stories throughout the semester!

  10. Hey Jillian! I was also in Myth and Folklore last semester, so it's nice to see you again. I am so jealous of your being done with college and knowing what you want to do. I've started travelling fairly recently, but I've not made it to France yet :( It's on my list though! I'm thinking Spain as well. I really hope you get into the French programs you mentioned! That sounds like a lot of fun. Congrats again on almost being done!

  11. Hey Jill! I was in Myth and Folklore like a year ago, and it's good to know that it's still as good as when I took it. Going to France seems like a really nice choice for a writer, since there's a lot of inspiration to be found there. Paris is a city of the Arts after all. If you really like writing, try checking out NaNoWriMo in November! If you haven't heard about it, it's this project where people are challenged to write an entire novel in a month! Some of my writer friends have taken part in it and they say they get more done than they would have alone because they know others are doing it.

  12. Hi Jillian, my name is Naomee. Parlez-vous Francais? I took a semester of French during my sophomore year for the mere reason to be able to speak during my trip to Paris! That must be so exciting to be graduating so soon! I feel like college just flies before your eyes. One thing we have in common is our love for writing! I really enjoy journaling and capturing my thoughts about everyday things I encounter. I wish you the best of luck with the rest of this semester and your future career.

  13. Hi Jillian! I love your story! You seem very spirited and free and I really appreciate that! I am also a letters major and I think it is so cool that you are also double majoring in French! I was not a fan of foreign language in Highschool but this semester I am in Latin and I love it! I look forward to reading your stories!

  14. Hey Jillian! I really enjoyed reading your introduction and thought that you did a great job putting it together! I too took the Mythology class last semester and realized that I actually do enjoy writing. I took latin as my language so I feel like I can't even imagine trying to major in a language. good luck with this class this semester!

  15. Hi Jillian, Wow this sounds like such a fun life. I think it is amazing what you are doing. I could not imagine just moving to Paris just because. I believe in you. that would be such a great place to write and relax before you find a big girl job. I am so ready to graduate also!! We rule!Have fun exploring the world!

  16. Hello Jillian! Congrats on graduating this may! I know I'm definitely looking forward to it as well. My best friend is like you where she really enjoys writing, she has a few unpublished books she's working on and I know she loves it. As an idea, if you enjoy sports or any sort of hobbies you may have can always just be an article writer for something involving that, it would be loads of fun. I wish you luck in looking for whatever it is you wanna be after graduation.

  18. Hi Jillian, Congrats on graduating this semester. That is a major accomplishment, and I can not wait to be there my self. I have 7 credit hours remaining after this semester. France seems like it would be a cool place to visit and explore.

  19. Hey Jillian, I thought your name sounded familiar. I was also in the Mythology and Folklore class last semester. Congrats on this being your last semester! I also am in the same boat and know how you feel, I will miss it but not really. I have never been abroad but would love to visit Europe. I say jump first (move to France) and then figure out a plan. You can really only do it while your young might as well see where it takes you! Good luck in this last semester! Almost done!!!!

  20. Hello Jillian!

Or should we call you Jill? I love that you have a huge passion for writing, and I can clearly see that through your post. It's always awesome to be able to tell that someone is in love with what they are studying! I went to Paris in the fall of 2016, and man, it was so beautiful. I don't blame you for wanting to live there! French sounds so hard, though, I don't know if I could do it. Congratulations on your final semester! I'm quite jealous!

  21. Hi Jillian congratulations on graduating this semester! It's awesome to see that you're graduating with a degree that you really like and have a plan for post graduation. I went to Paris last spring for a weekend and it was awesome. Nice to meet you and good luck graduating in May.

Writing is a vast and varied interest that is only limited by your imagination. I'm sure you find a job that fits you and your interests well. France sounds amazing and I would also like to visit there someday.

  23. Hey, Jillian, nice to meet you. Your majors sound super interesting. I have a serious case of wanderlust myself and I hope I'll make it to France at some point in my life. I have a friend that studied abroad in Paris and loved every second of it. I can also relate to your love of writing. I too have been telling my stories since I was a child. I would tell my stories to my great-grandma and she would write them down for me, I still have some of them! Anyway, I hope your semester is going well!

  24. Hi Jillian!

I am a little bit in awe of your dedication and spirit; you have a confidence I've never dreamed of, and I have no doubt your life will take you to wild and fantastic places. I really enjoy your writing, and huge congratulations on the impending graduation! I've dreamed of taking an extended trip myself once school is finished, and your enthusiasm and dedication has given me renewed inspiration to do it now, while I still can. Thank you!

  25. Hey Jillian!!
I think that it is so cool that you are passionate about writing! I am not to fond of writing but there is a definite need for it. Writing is how ideas are passed on and the only way that people can learn is by reading different writings! Also, good luck with your dream of being in France you can do it!
Thanks for sharing and have a good rest of the semester!!

  26. Hello, nice to meet you Jillian!
I just finished up reading your introduction! It is awesome that you are basically done with your college career and even more awesome that you will be moving to France in some capacity! I am sure that you could live there and work to make ends meet while writing in your free time!

  27. Hi Jillian, it is nice to meet you! First of all, congrats on almost graduating!! You are almost there and I hope you enjoy your last two weeks here at OU. :) It is fascinating to hear that your major is French; I do not hear too many people majoring in the language. I had the opportunity to study in Clermont-Ferrand, France (have you been there?) last summer and the country was absolutely breathtaking. I admire your love and passion for writing - not many people are brave enough to truly pursue what they want to do in life so kudos to you! Again, congrats on graduating, and I hope you enjoy whatever life has to offer! :)

  28. Hi Jillian! I would love to go to France. I took French in high school and was the president of the French Club (a decade ago), but when I came to OU I didn't have time to take French. I was really disappointed. I hope you are able to pursue your passion. It can be really rewarding to do what you love every day. Good luck!
